Anger is an emotion I know all too well. Being a first-generation American-Latina myself, growing up in a household where my parents’ go-to parenting tools were: fear and threats, anger played a big part in my upbringing. Unfortunately, I learned very quickly that my own emotions weren’t safe at home, let alone did my parents know how to deal with their own emotions. Trust me, I’ve heard plenty of threatswith “chanclas” or “cintos”, especially when I was a “grosera” for standing up for myself.
Through my work and healing (e.g. therapy, reading, podcasts), I vowed to raise my future children in an emotionally safe family environment. I don’t ever want them to feel bad for speaking up or standing up for themselves. I am super grateful for the love my parents show me and understand why they chose to raise us with anger, however, I want to do better than they did for the generations to come!
